Scholarship Award 2007
Year 2007 KWA Scholarship Award ceremony was given at
the KWA Center 123 East 96th Street Tacoma, Washington in June 14, 2007.
Mistress
of Ceremony Sophia Park started the program with the Flag Salutation
and National Anthems. KWA president, Sandra Englund said that she was
very proud of the Scholarship recipients, that the winners are interested
in Math and science. "Our community needs people like you for future
leaders. I hope that continue to pursue your dream". Michelle Woo,
KWA Education chair, announced scholarship recipients: Sung Kyo Oh,
Alex Junho Kim, Min Sun Kim, Janna Chae, Vivian Lee, and Jessica Kim.
Each received $500.00, A Certificate and a flower bouquet.
KWA Board of Chair, Jong Dameron made a special remark that the scholarship
recipient could not be here without their parents support. Because their
parents support and motivation, they could pursue what they are now.
She thanked their parents for their support. Your support help our community
better.
Korean
American Association of Tacoma, Lee Jong Joo, congratulated the scholarship
award receipients. He was proud that KWA is there to support for the
community work not only for the senior citizens but, also for the youth
group which is vested in our communities.
KWA Board Ok soon Wilson was admiring the students' essays. She mentioned
that their essay touched her heart and was proud of their dream for
African missionary Doctor, a beautiful artist, Teacher and community
leaders etc. Three essays were chosen to be read by the Scholarship
recipient: Daniel Oh (Sung Kyo): How can we make a difference in the
world? , Kim Min
Sun, and Vivian
Lee , My Dream.
The Key Note speaker, Denise Yochum, Pierce College President mentioned
that KWA is actively involved in the community in ways that make such
a significant difference to all members of the community, regardless
of ethnicity. She said that KWA as a group is an active partner with
Pierce College in the Lakewood International Festival and participants
in the Korean Alphabet Day held at Pierce College in October. She was
proud to say that the Pierce College associated with an organization
that is focused on community service and education.
It
was a great speech especially about the role of higher education which
Ms. Yochum says that is the equalizer. "If you can become educated,
it does not matter where you come from, what you look like, what gender
or ethnicity you are....You have the power to change your corner of
the world.
The Key Note speaker, Denise Yochum, Pierce College President emphasized
the "MILK billboard advertisements" : Motivation, Integrity,
Leadership, and Knowledge. They show a person with a big white mustache.
She referred to as it opens up our minds to new ways of looking at people,
places, cultures and helps us to embrace our sameness and celebrate
our differences. She proclaimed that
"MILK it for all it is worth" for our community.
