Boeing and United Airlines Finalize 787 Order

SEATTLE and CHICAGO, Feb. 25 /PR

Newswire-FirstCall/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and United Airlines (Nasdaq: UAUA) have finalized an order for 25 787-8 jetliners. The agreement includes the opportunity to purchase another 50 Dreamliners.

"Boeing and United Airlines share an 80-year partnership," said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "United, which launched the Boeing 777, now begins a new chapter with the 787 Dreamliner, the most technologically advanced commercial jetliner ever built."

The order is valued at $4.2 billion at average list prices.

"United's Boeing 787 order represents a substantial investment in our future and will enhance the significant progress we are making in improving the global competitiveness of our company while providing the opportunity to open new profitable markets and serve a broader range of international destinations," said John Tague, president of United Airlines.

United expects to take delivery of the 787s at the same time it will begin to retire its Boeing 747s and 767s operating on international routes.

The 787 Dreamliner, currently in flight test, will provide greater fuel efficiency, allowing airlines to add new, nonstop city pairs and the additional frequencies that passengers prefer.

The 787 also promises a more comfortable flying experience for passengers. Its innovations include a new interior environment with improvements in air filtration, higher cabin pressurization resulting in reduced physical fatigue, larger windows, more stowage space, improved lighting and other passenger-preferred conveniences.

The technologically advanced 787 will also provide airlines with up to 45 percent more cargo revenue capacity.

Including United Airlines, 57 customers around the world have ordered 876 Dreamliners, making the 787 the fastest-selling new commercial jetliner in history.

United expects to take delivery of the aircraft between 2016 and 2019; at the same time it will retire its international Boeing 747s and 767s. These 50 new aircraft will reduce the average seat count by about 19 percent compared to the aircraft they will replace, and by about 10 percent when averaged over the entire international fleet. With the Airbus A350 powered by the Rolls Royce Trent XWB engine, and the Boeing 787 powered by either the Rolls Royce Trent 1000 or the GE GEnx, United estimates it will reduce its fuel costs and carbon emissions from the 50 aircraft by about 33 percent. Additionally, the company expects average lifetime maintenance costs for the new aircraft to be approximately 40 percent lower per available seat mile than the aircraft that will be retired. In addition, in the past, United has expressed interest in becoming the sole GoldCare maintenance, repair, and overhaul provider for the Boeing 787.

United Airline Report 2009 shows that the company closed the quarter with total cash of $3.4 billion, unrestricted cash of more than $3.0 billion, and restricted cash of $341 million.

Completed financings totaling more than $2.1 billion in the fourth quarter and approximately $700 million early in the first quarter 2010, generating approximately $1.8 billion in new liquidity and reducing fixed obligations in 2010 and 2011 by more than $700 million.

United Airline is committed on time arrival which the company ranked No. 1 in on-time arrivals among the major network carriers for the fourth quarter and the full year 2009 based on preliminary industry results. United ranked first among the five U.S. network carriers in on-time arrival performance in both the fourth quarter 2009 and full year 2009. The company had a record-breaking November with the best on-time performance since reporting to the Department of Transportation began in October 1987. It also tied its best ever day for arrival performance on November 28, when more than 96% of flights were on time.

The Boeing Dreamliner 787 has just joined a third airplane flight-test program. ZA004, the fourth flight-test airplane to be built, took off at 11:43 a.m. local time from Paine Field in Everett, Wash in February 24th, 2010. The program plan called for ZA004 to fly before ZA003 because the data ZA004 is collecting is needed more quickly both for certification and development of the 787-9 and operated successful.

Capt. Heather Ross, She’s one of 10 pilots who have now flown the 787 and is the lead pilot for ZA004 throughout the flight test program. Capt. Heather Ross is a 787 engineering project pilot for The Boeing Company. In this position, Ross is responsible for 787 project pilot support with airplane design, handling qualities assessments, extended twin-engine operations (ETOPS) and Service Ready issues, and is responsible for conducting tests on ZA004, the third 787 airplane to enter test. Capt. Heather Ross had so many years of experienced who previously served as a Boeing production flight test pilot. She currently holds an FAA type rating in the 737, 747-400, 757/767, and 777 airplanes, and has participated in numerous test programs such as the 777-300, 777-300ER, 777-200LR, 757-300, 737-700/800/900/900ER, 737 Short Field Performance, 737 Wedgetail, 767 Tanker, and F-22 Flying Testbed.

Ross originally joined Boeing in 1985 as a flight test engineer. In 1988, she joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves as a pilot, where she flew C-5 and, later, C-141 aircraft.
