OctobeOct 29, 2012  Half a million people have been left without power as Hurricane Sandy batters the East Coast ahead of her landfall tonight - and authorities have warned they will switch off power across areas of Manhattan, potentially affecting millions more.

As Sandy barrels towards New Jersey, where it is expected to touch down at around 9pm on Monday, at least 500,000 people across Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Virginia are without power. And, with utilities company ConEd calling customers to warn it will shut off power lines across Manhattan and Brooklyn, millions more will be affected. The company shut off power in 200,000 homes in the area in last year's Hurricane Irene - but this year's storm packs a much fiercer punch.

Sandy, which forecasters said could be the largest hurricane in U.S. history, has revealed the first signs of her monstrous power, dumping snow, breaching rivers and forcing floodwaters into towns and homes across the East Coast.

Atlantic City, which has already suffered heavy flooding, is expected to take the brunt of the monster storm as Sandy smashes into land tonight, unleashing storm surges, gale force winds and rainfall that could leave millions more without power.

The hurricane strengthened overnight to nearly 1,000 miles wide with winds in excess of 90 miles per hour as it accelerated north at a speed of 28mph. Its pressure has also dropped to record lows, which means the hurricane is strengthening further.

October 28-29, 2012- Hurricane Sandy takes an extremely rare track, making landfall near Atlantic City, New Jersey with 85 m.p.h. winds. Sandy causes an all-time high storm surge in New York City along with widespread power outages.

Just before 8 a.m. on October 29, Sandy turned to the north-northwest and started to make its expected approach towards the U.S. coast, still maintaining Category 1 strength. Although the National Hurricane Center has not officially confirmed the location, at 5:46 PM local time, Accuweather announced Super Storm Sandy had come ashore in between Avalon and Sea Isle City in Cape May County, New Jersey. NOAA announced officially that the storm had come ashore at approximately 8 p.m. EDT 5 miles southwest of Atlantic City, New Jersey. On October 29, 2012, at 7 p.m. EDT, Sandy was declared a post-tropical cyclone.

Sandy's impact on the United States stretched from North Carolina to New England with tropical storm force winds stretching far inland and significant mountain snows in West Virginia. The cyclone brought a significant storm surge to New York City on the evening of October 29, with numerous streets and tunnels flooded in Lower Manhattan and other areas of the city.

The Super Storm called Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic tropical system in diameter on record, it was a late-season tropical cyclone that affected Jamaica, Cuba, the Bahamas, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the eastern seaboard of the United States, reaching to the area south of the Great Lakes Region of the United States, and Eastern Canada. The 18th tropical cyclone, 18th named storm, and 10th hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, Sandy developed from an elongated tropical wave in the western Caribbean Sea on October 22. It became a tropical depression, quickly strengthened, and was upgraded to a tropical storm six hours later. Sandy moved slowly northward toward the Greater Antilles and gradually strengthened.

U.S. federal response teams are already providing assistance for those affected by the storm.

This morning, President Obama convened a video-teleconference in the White House Situation Room with his team to receive the latest update on Sandy’s impact and the work being done to help communities begin the recovery process.

Overnight, at the requests of the governors, the President approved major disaster declarations for New Jersey and New York, making additional federal support for state and local efforts available, as well as direct federal assistance to affected individuals in declared counties.
