Boeing Co. shares jumped Friday after the aircraft builder said it received U.S.
and European regulatory approval for its long-awaited 787 Dreamliner and
announced the first delivery date for the jet.
The Chicago-based manufacturer said Japan’s ANA would receive the first 787
on Sept. 26, a day after its contractual delivery. The Dreamliner’s first
passenger flight is scheduled for the end of October.
ANA is expected to receive 12 more 787s by the end of March
Both the FAA and European regulators certified the plane for flight on
Friday. Boeing completed flight tests on the 787 this month.
Boeing plans to deliver the first 787 to Japan's All Nippon Airways in
September. The airline plans to fly it for the first time as a charter on Oct.
26 and begin regular service Nov. 1.
Plagued by various production problems, delivery is about three years late.
The Chicago airline maker has orders from 55 customers for more than 800 of the
planes. They will cost $185.2 million to $218.1 million apiece.
More than half of the Boeing 787 is made with composite materials. Boeing Co.
says the airplane will be quieter and use 20 percent less fuel than planes of
similar size. It will hold between 200 and 330 passengers, depending on the
layout. Boeing made its initial application for the 787 in March of 2003. The first
model was rolled out in July 2007. The airplane first flew in late 2009. The planes will be built in Washington state in Everett and South Carolina. Governor Christine Gregoire congratulated today
“I congratulate
Boeing and its workforce on reaching this incredible milestone. Certification of
the 787 Dreamliner begins a new chapter in the company’s long history that will
include one of the most innovative and fuel-efficient airplanes in the world. I
look forward to Boeing completing its first delivery of the Dreamliner next
month to Nippon Airways.
“This achievement is more evidence that
Washington state is, and will remain the global center for aerospace. Home to
more than 650 aerospace supply companies and 84,000 highly-trained aerospace
workers – Washington state is at the forefront of aerospace production and
innovation. I’m committed to doing everything I can to ensure it stays that way,
and growing this important industry in our state.”
"I congratulate Boeing and its workforce on reaching this incredible
milestone," said Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire. "Certification of the 787
Dreamliner begins a new chapter in the company's long history that will include
one of the most innovative and fuel-efficient airplanes in the world." About 78,000 of Boeing's 168,000 workers are in Washington.

Boeing, ANA Roll Out the first 787 Dreamliner that will enter into service
"Dream Came True" Boeing Flying on 787's first flight to Japan
EVERETT, Wash., Aug. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The first Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787
Dreamliner that will enter into service with launch customer ANA rolled out of
the paint hangar today. The airplane bears a special livery signifying the core
element's of ANA's service brand – innovation, uniqueness and the inspiration of
Japan.
"Our teams are making outstanding progress in completing the first airplane
to be delivered and achieving certification of the 787," said Scott Fancher,
vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "We are inspired by the
airline's enthusiasm for this airplane and look forward to the day when we make
our first delivery to ANA."
ANA's first 787 features a short-haul international interior design with
business- and economy-class cabins.
"ANA's passengers will be the first to experience the 787 Dreamliner's
comfortable interior environment," said Mitsuo Morimoto, ANA senior executive
vice president and member of the board of directors. "Combined with ANA's
superior levels of service, passengers will enjoy a spacious interior, larger
windows, comfortable seats and touch-panel in-flight entertainment screens."
Some of the most innovative technologies aboard the 787 aren't visible, but
will help passengers have a more pleasant and comfortable flight. Passengers
will arrive at their destinations feeling more refreshed with the airplane's
cleaner cabin air, lower cabin altitude and higher humidity.
Boeing plans to deliver the first 787 to ANA in September. ANA will operate
its first 787 revenue flight as a charter international flight from Tokyo to
Hong Kong.
About the Boeing 787 Dreamliner
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is an all-new airplane featuring a host of
technologies that provide exceptional value to airlines and unparalleled levels
of comfort to passengers. It is the first mid-size airplane capable of flying
long-range routes, enabling airlines to open new, non-stop routes preferred by
the traveling public.
Composite materials, more-electric systems, advanced aerodynamics and modern
engines combine to make the 787 more fuel efficient and provide lower operating
costs. Passengers will appreciate the cleaner cabin air, higher humidity and
lower cabin altitude that combine to help them feel more refreshed after flying
on the 787. Other innovations include larger windows with electrochromic shades,
bigger onboard luggage bins and reliable LED lighting.
---------------------------------------------------------------- The first Dreamliner for commercial service left the paint shop on August 6,
2011, for Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA). The 787 will enter service
for ANA in September 2011.
In September 2010, it was reported that a further two 787s might join the test fleet, making a total of eight flight test aircraft. On September 10, 2010, a partial engine surge or runaway occurred in a Trent engine on ZA001 at Roswell. On October 4, 2010, the sixth 787, ZA006 joined the test program with its first flight.
On November 9, 2010, Boeing 787, ZA002 made an emergency landing after smoke and flames were detected in the main cabin during a test flight over Texas. A Boeing spokeswoman said the airliner landed safely and the crew was evacuated after landing at the Laredo International Airport, Texas. The electrical fire caused some systems to fail before landing. Following this incident, Boeing suspended flight testing on November 10, 2010. Ground testing was performed instead. On November 22, 2010, Boeing announced that the in-flight fire can be primarily attributed to foreign object debris (FOD) that was present in the electrical bay. After electrical system and software changes, the 787 resumed company flight testing on December 23, 2010.
Certification by the European Aviation Safety Agency is expected by the end of 2011. On February 24, 2011, Boeing announced that the 787 had completed 80% of the test conditions for Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine and 60% of the conditions for the General Electric GEnx-1B engine. On July 4, 2011, All Nippon Airways began a week of airline operations testing using a 787 in Japan.
As of August 15, 2011, the 787 test aircraft have flown 4,828 hours in 1,707 flights combined. During testing the 787 has visited 14 countries in Asia, Europe, North America, and South America to test in extreme climates and conditions, along with route testing.
ANA is the launch customer for the new Boeing widebody, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, ordering 50 examples with an option for 50 more during April 2004. Deliveries will begin in late 2011. ANA split the order between 30 of the short-range 787-3 and 20 of the long haul 787-8, and during October 2004 announced it had selected Rolls-Royce to supply the engines. However, ANA later converted their -3 orders to the -8 variant. The aircraft will allow new routes to be opened to mid-sized cities not previously served, such as Barcelona, Boston, Brussels, Düsseldorf, Denver, Miami and Montreal.
The 787 development and production has involved a large-scale collaboration with numerous suppliers around the globe. It is being assembled at the Boeing Everett Factory in Everett, Washington.

Aircraft will also be assembled at a new factory in North Charleston, South Carolina. Both sites will deliver 787s to airline customers. Originally planned to enter service in May 2008, the project has suffered due to many reasons including the worst lay off started year 2008 due to the economic crises. However, the airliner's maiden flight took place on December 15, 2009, and completed flight testing and certification in mid-2011 which is the 787 will enter service for ANA in September, 2011.
