"We will continue to provide any assistance we can to minimise their suffering and loss of life," he said in a statement. Admiral Keating has had high-level discussions with China's militay and political elite for more than a year. Although he is the senior military officer for all of the Pacific region, his post has traditionally also been viewed as, at least in part, diplomatic. The U.S. Pacific Command also has extensive training and experience in humanitarian operations. Pacific Command ships from the U.S. Navy are also off the coast of Myanmar with relief supplies and helicopters. (2)

UNDP and WFP (The United Nations Development Programme and the World Food Programme) also stepped up their support to authorities in China as they deal with relief efforts in the wake of last Monday's devastating earthquake in Sichuan province. UNDP has allocated $100,000 for emergency relief activities, which will be used in part to help coordinate the relief response and make needs assessments, the agency announced today in Beijing. It is also providing tents, quilts, clothing, food, drinking water and medicines to some of the most affected areas.

In the meantime, UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon visited cyclone-devastated areas Arriving in Myanmar in May 22nd, 2008, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has seen first-hand the devastation left by Cyclone Nargis, which has killed tens of thousands of people and uprooted the lives of 2.4 million others since it struck the country earlier this month.
